There is no magic bullet to solve all of the problems within your business.  A systems view that includes recognition that there are not “right” answers to systems issues and that there are causes for every effect helps to develop a culture that recognizes other points of view.  The steps to preventing a problem - outline the issue in terms of the goals, map the causes and find solutions - provides a simple structured approach to applying the scientific method to issues in your business.  As with any program besides the process itself there is the maintenance of the overall program.  The approach should be kept simple and viewed first as a pilot program that can be improved.  There are significant gains that can be made within any business if we learn to tap into the creativity of the people that work within our organizations.  Much of problem solving is about better communication.  The success of any organization is a function of how effectively it communicates the information it already possesses.  The systems method of applying cause and effect is a very principled approach that doesn’t change over time.  This approach reminds us to stay focused on the goals with a theme of prevention.  An excellent systems quote that summarizes much of what has been covered in this paper is by Arthur W. Jones – “All organizations are perfectly aligned to get the results they get.”  The word organizations can be replaced with departments, businesses or teams.  It is important to remember that success and failure both have causes and the better we understand those causes the better we become at controlling them and ultimately meeting our goals.  “Stuff” just doesn’t happen - There are causes.
